Best Anime Expeditions Starter Units

Choose the best Anime Expeditions starter units for early Story, safe clears, control, and a team worth investing in.

A good starter is not simply the rarest pull. Your first team needs one unit that can hold early waves, one answer to leaks or bosses, and as little wasted investment as possible. The shortlist below ranks units whose public kits are specific enough to make a real player decision; units with hidden or incomplete kits stay off the numbered list.

S · The Hero
Physical starter teams
Hero Blessing buffs Physical units in range and grows by 5% with each upgrade.
Keep if two or more early damage dealers are Physical; place the carry inside the aura.
S · Salmon Sorcerer
Safe clears and leak control
A permanent 20% Slow plus a two-second Stagger creates time for the whole team.
Use when raw damage is fine but fast enemies keep reaching the exit.
A · Cursed Student
First long-term carry
Copied follow-up attacks and Bat Spirits reward a team built around attack value and Bleed stacks.
Invest when you can support the passive instead of treating it as a solo starter.
Check first
Any unopened Beginner Path reward
The current Beginner Path guarantees a Farm unit and a Mythic unit, but the awarded names can change.
Open the reward panel before spending Gems on a role the path already gives you.

Best first-team order

Start with the cheapest reliable wave clear you own. Add The Hero only when its aura reaches a Physical carry, then add Salmon Sorcerer if control is the missing piece. Cursed Student becomes the investment target after the team can create Bleed stacks or provide a strong nearby attack to copy.

  • Do not reroll traits on temporary Rare or Epic units.
  • Do not level six units evenly; fund the opener and one carry first.
  • Use the Beginner Banner and Beginner Path before chasing the Standard Banner Secret.

When to replace a starter

Replace a unit because its job is no longer being done, not because a higher rarity appeared. A Legendary support can remain useful beside Mythics, while a costly Mythic can be a poor opener. Compare placement cost, upgrade timing, range coverage, and whether the passive actually activates on your map.

  • Keep one cheap deploy for dual-lane stages.
  • Keep one control option for fast or staggerable enemies.
  • Only move rare materials to a unit you expect to use in Story, Expeditions, or Raids.

Player questions

What is the best starter unit?

The Hero is the best support start for a Physical team; Salmon Sorcerer is the safest control start. Cursed Student has the higher long-term carry ceiling when its passive has proper support.

Should I reset my account for one pull?

No. Finish the Beginner Path and inspect its guaranteed Farm and Mythic rewards first. Account progress, quests, and guaranteed rewards usually matter more than repeatedly restarting for an unverified banner target.

Release-week ranking based on disclosed kits and current EA+ systems. Unknown unit kits are deliberately not assigned a fake tier.
